Hi, I'm Sarah.
I'm never quite sure what you're supposed to write on an About page. I guess the obvious place to start is, "Hello, nice to meet you"?
I've worked in customer support at Ghost for more than 12 years, which is kind of wild writing that down. I've been there long enough that a pretty significant chunk of my adult life has been spent on figuring out why something isn't working right, explaining weird technical shit to non-technical people, and helping people get "unstuck."
I fucking love it.
Not every second of it, obviously. 😂 But I really do love what I do.
If something isn't working the way I think it should, I have a hard time leaving it alone. I need to know why. I've gone down a lot of unnecessary rabbit holes in my life, but occasionally something useful comes out of them.
This website is one of those rabbit holes.
What am I going to write about?
Ghost, for sure.
There are things I've explained hundreds of times over the years that I know could be useful to people outside of a support queue. Sometimes you just need somebody to explain it like a normal person, or explain it as if the person you're speaking to is a 5-year old.
I plan to write about support because, after doing this for a long time, I have thoughts. So many thoughts.
I also imagine AI will probably show up a lot here, too, because I'm currently fascinated by it. I've been using it to build things, experiment with things, and see how far I can get with ideas I wouldn't necessarily know how to build on my own.
Technology topics in general are also fair game.
I'll probably also randomly write about something happening in my life that has absolutely nothing to do with any of the above.
I'm not trying to create a niche here. I already have a job. I don't need to give my personal website one too.
About me, minus the work stuff
I'm married, I have three daughters, and we live in a small town in rural Michigan.
I love photography. I used to raise chickens (and am still obsessed with them). I'm always making something or messing with something. I can lose an embarrassing amount of time tweaking a website that was perfectly fine three hours ago. I own a lot of domain names...
I also need my house to be clean to function like a normal human being. Specifically the floors. I don't know why the floors matter so much, but they do.
There's usually at least one project I've started that has gotten completely out of hand. This website may currently be that project.
I swear a lot. Like, a lot a lot.
I'm opinionated, although I don't think being opinionated means believing you're always right. I'll change my mind when something changes my mind. I'll also tell you when I think something is stupid.

Sometimes saying the quiet part out loud saves everybody a lot of fucking time.
I stand by that.
Why The Screen Between Us?
This actually took me a while.
I went through SEVERAL different names for what I wanted to call this space. I hated most of them.
Then I kept thinking about how much of my life happens through a screen (typical millenial). I work through one. I've made friends through one, hell–I met my husband on Myspace back in the day! I learn through one. I build things through one. Half the time when I'm trying to solve some random problem, I've got a laptop open, my phone next to me, and approximately 46 tabs that I'm definitely going to close when I'm done.
(I'm not going to close them.)
And with support especially, there's literally a screen between me and the person I'm talking to. I've spent years trying to figure out what someone on the other side of that screen is seeing, what they're trying to do, and where things went sideways.
So, The Screen Between Us. It stuck.
That's probably enough about me.
I don't have a grand plan for this place. That's actually kind of the point.
I'll write things when I have something worth writing about. Some of it will be useful. Some of it will probably be me documenting whatever weird thing I've gotten interested in that week. Some of it may have nothing to do with technology at all.
We'll see what happens.
